Why this might work

As people age, the heart's natural pacemaker slows down, so the heart cannot beat as fast during intense exercise. Even though the heart still pumps the same amount of blood with each beat and the muscles extract oxygen just as well, the slower heart rate means less blood flows through the body per minute.
