When sodium bicarbonate is swallowed, it enters the bloodstream and increases the level of bicarbonate in the blood. This creates a chemical gradient that pulls hydrogen ions out of muscle cells into the blood, where they combine with bicarbonate to form carbon dioxide and water. The carbon dioxide is breathed out, reducing acid buildup inside the muscles. This allows muscle fibers to contract more forcefully for longer, improving performance during intense exercise.

4 studiesThe study gave people baking soda before they did strength exercises and found it didn't help them do more reps or feel less burn. So, it doesn't support the idea that baking soda reduces muscle acid buildup to improve performance.
Taking baking soda didn't help most people run better, and many got stomach problems. Even though it helped men a little, overall, it doesn't reliably improve muscle performance like the claim says.
