When people move less, their muscles don't contract as often, which causes the muscles to become less able to take in sugar from the blood and burn fat for energy. This leads to sugar and fat building up in the wrong places like the liver and muscle tissue, which makes the body less responsive to insulin. Over time, this causes blood sugar to stay high and fat to accumulate abnormally, increasing the risk of diabetes and obesity.
