When glucose is scarce, cancer cells with high levels of MUC1 take up more glutamine to make building blocks for DNA, but they cannot use those building blocks properly without glucose. This causes a pile-up of a key molecule called aspartate, which should be used to make DNA components, but instead stays unused. Without enough DNA building blocks, the cells cannot copy their DNA and get stuck in an early growth phase, stopping them from dividing.
