When a person has a lot of fat around the belly, it releases fatty acids that flood the liver and make it resistant to insulin. At the same time, fat around the hips and thighs normally helps keep insulin sensitivity high by releasing helpful chemicals and reducing inflammation. But when both areas have a lot of fat, the harmful effects from the belly fat take over, causing blood sugar to rise and leading to type 2 diabetes — even if the ratio between belly and hip fat looks normal.
