Selenium is used to make special proteins that clean up harmful molecules produced during normal cell activity. These harmful molecules can damage DNA and cause chronic swelling in the colon. When selenium levels are high, more of these cleanup proteins are made, which prevents DNA damage and reduces swelling. This stops abnormal cells from forming and growing into cancer.
