When the liver is stressed by excess fat, it releases more IGFBP1 into the blood. This protein attaches to a receptor on liver cells called integrin β1, which turns off genes that make fat and turns on genes that burn fat. At the same time, it blocks signals that cause inflammation, reducing damage to the liver.
