Lutein from food or supplements enters the bloodstream, travels to the eyes, and builds up in the central part of the retina as a yellow pigment. This pigment blocks harmful blue light and neutralizes damaging molecules produced by light exposure. When the eyes are exposed to bright light, this protection allows the retina to detect fine differences in brightness more clearly, especially in small, detailed patterns.
