Selenium is used to make special proteins that clean up harmful chemicals produced during normal cell activity. These chemicals can damage DNA and cause inflammation in the colon. When selenium levels are high, more of these cleanup proteins are made, which prevents DNA damage and reduces long-term inflammation. This stops abnormal cells from forming and growing into cancer in the colon. The rectum does not show the same response, possibly because its cells have different exposure or metabolism of selenium.
