When a person has too much body fat, fat cells release large amounts of fatty acids into the blood. The liver takes up these fatty acids and turns them into fat droplets. At the same time, the body becomes less responsive to insulin, which causes the liver to make even more fat and stop breaking down existing fat. This builds up fat in the liver.
