People with more belly fat relative to under-skin fat have fat cells in their belly that are more sensitive to stress hormones released during exercise. These hormones trigger the breakdown of stored fat into fatty acids, which are then burned for energy. Because belly fat cells have more hormone receptors and better blood flow, they release fat more easily than under-skin fat. After exercise, the body keeps burning fat at a higher rate, and the fatty acids from belly fat are preferentially used. This causes a bigger drop in belly fat compared to other fat stores.
