A specific lipid molecule in the cell membrane, called PIP2, acts like a molecular anchor that allows glucose transporters to attach to the outer surface of the cell. When the cell receives signals from insulin or high salt conditions, PIP2 helps guide the glucose transporters to the membrane and locks them in place so they can bring glucose inside. Without this lipid, the transporters cannot reach the surface, no matter what signal the cell receives.

Scientists found that when a certain lipid (PIP2) in the cell membrane is disrupted, glucose transporters can’t move to the surface—even when the cell is stressed or given insulin. But when they added PIP2 back, the transporters worked again, proving PIP2 is essential for both types of triggers.
