Prebiotic fibers increase the number and variety of beneficial bacteria in the gut through fermentation.
See the technical phrasing
Prebiotic fibers enhance the proliferation and diversity of beneficial gut bacteria by serving as a fermentable substrate.
Prebiotic fibers pass through the stomach and small intestine without being broken down, then reach the colon where specific bacteria break them down to produce short-chain fatty acids. This feeding process causes those good bacteria to multiply and dominate the gut, while harmful bacteria decline because they cannot use the fibers or are outcompeted. The fatty acids made during this process also create an environment that further blocks harmful microbes.
