When rats drink milk with A1 β-casein, their gut breaks it down into a peptide called BCM-7. This peptide enters the bloodstream and reaches the brain, where it binds to opioid receptors and changes how brain cells communicate. At the same time, BCM-7 shifts the gut bacteria to favor Clostridium histolyticum, which produces chemicals like hippurate and allantoin. These chemicals enter the blood, cross into the brain, and disrupt energy use and chemical balance in emotion-controlling areas. Together, these changes make the rats show signs of depression.
