When a rat drinks milk with A1 β-casein, its gut breaks it down into a peptide called BCM-7. This peptide enters the bloodstream, crosses into the brain, and overstimulates opioid receptors in areas that control stress and emotion. At the same time, the milk changes the gut bacteria, causing them to produce chemicals like hippurate and putrescine that also enter the brain. These chemicals alter brain chemistry by reducing energy production and disrupting how nerve cells communicate. Together, these changes make the rat respond to stress by becoming passive and immobile.
