Regular exercise reduces levels of prostaglandin E2 in the human body
When muscles are stressed during exercise, tiny tears occur in muscle fibers, which releases a fatty substance that gets converted into prostaglandin E2 by a specific enzyme. This prostaglandin E2 is quickly broken down and flushed out in urine. Regular exercise does not reduce prostaglandin E2 levels overall; instead, each workout causes a temporary spike in its production as part of the muscle repair process.
What the research says
3 studiesPeople who exercised a lot for a whole year didn't end up with lower levels of prostaglandin E2 than people who didn't exercise — so exercise doesn't seem to reduce this chemical in the body.
The study found that after running, the body produces more of a chemical related to prostaglandin E2 — not less. So, instead of exercise lowering it, it temporarily raises it.
