When people drink drinks with artificial sweeteners instead of sugary ones, their taste for sweetness doesn't drop much, so they still crave sweet foods. At the same time, since there's no sugar to spike blood glucose, insulin doesn't rise enough to signal the body to store fat or slow down energy use. Without these metabolic signals, body weight and blood sugar stay the same.
