A special strain of E. coli cannot make its own methionine unless it gets vitamin B12. When this bacterium is exposed to a sample from the worm's gut, it only grows if the sample contains vitamin B12 made by another bacterium. The amount of growth shows how much vitamin B12 is present, letting scientists find which bacteria in the worm's microbiome are producing it.
