When CD8⁺ T cells are exposed to a tumor for a long time, they run out of fuel and get stuck in a broken energy state. Early on, they can still switch how they make energy and recover if given the right support. But if the stress continues, their mitochondria break down, they accumulate toxic fats and acids, and their DNA gets damaged. This permanently changes their genes so they can no longer fight the tumor, even if the environment improves.
