During intense sprinting and repeated efforts, muscles produce acid faster than they can neutralize it. This acid buildup slows down muscle contraction and reduces endurance. Even with extra beta-alanine, the muscles don't make enough of the substance that neutralizes acid in just three weeks, so performance still drops.
