The Claim

Daily supplementation with 5g hydrolyzed collagen and 80mg vitamin C for 16 weeks increases dermis density by 16.3% in women aged 40-65, as measured by ultrasound, with significant improvements detectable after 8 weeks (10.9% increase) and continuing to improve through 16 weeks.

In plain English

Taking a daily supplement of 5 grams of hydrolyzed collagen and 80 mg of vitamin C for 16 weeks increases skin density by 16.3% in women aged 40 to 65. Ultrasound measurements show a noticeable increase of 10.9% after 8 weeks, with continued improvement over 16 weeks.

Why this might work

When you swallow collagen and vitamin C every day, your stomach breaks the collagen into tiny pieces called peptides. These peptides and vitamin C travel through your blood to your skin. In the deeper layer of your skin, called the dermis, the peptides wake up cells called fibroblasts. Vitamin C helps these cells build new collagen and other supportive materials. At the same time, the peptides block enzymes that normally break down collagen. So more collagen is made and less is destroyed. Over weeks, this causes the dermis to become denser and thicker, which starts to be measurable after 8 weeks and continues to improve up to 16 weeks.

This study shows that taking collagen with vitamin C for 4 months makes the deeper layer of your skin about 16% denser, just like the claim says.
