Atorvastatin lowers levels of certain gut bacteria called Clostridium, which changes the types of bile acids in the body. These changed bile acids reduce the production of a hormone called GLP-1, which normally tells the pancreas to release insulin after eating. With less GLP-1, the pancreas releases less insulin, causing blood sugar to rise over time.
