The mother's blood carries enough iron to make red blood cells for the baby, no matter if she takes a low or high dose of iron pills. This keeps the placenta supplying oxygen to the fetus and allows the baby to make enough red blood cells after birth, so the baby does not die from lack of oxygen or anemia.
