When someone takes sodium bicarbonate, it increases the level of bicarbonate in the blood. This bicarbonate catches excess acid produced by muscles during intense sprinting, making it easier for the acid to leave the muscle cells. As a result, the inside of the muscle stays less acidic, which keeps the muscle fibers contracting strongly and efficiently, allowing more power to be generated during repeated sprints.
