When sodium bicarbonate is taken by mouth, it increases the level of bicarbonate in the blood. This allows hydrogen ions, which build up in muscles during intense activity, to move out of the muscle cells more easily. This keeps the inside of the muscle less acidic, which helps enzymes that make energy keep working longer. This does not change how fast muscles heal after damage or reduce how sore they feel.
