The Claim

Daily supplementation with Eurycoma longifolia water extract (Physta) at doses of 50 mg or 100 mg for 12 weeks does not cause significant sustained changes in reproductive hormone levels (progesterone, testosterone, estradiol, FSH, LH) in menopausal women compared with placebo, aside from a transient progesterone increase at week 6 that resolves by week 12, indicating that Physta has no major hormonal effect.

Cause and effect

In plain English

Taking a daily supplement made from a plant called Eurycoma longifolia (also known as tongkat ali) for 12 weeks did not cause lasting changes in the levels of major reproductive hormones like estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone in women going through menopause. There was a temporary rise in progesterone after 6 weeks, but it went back to normal by week 12. So this supplement does not have a big effect on hormones.

See the scientific wording

In a 12-week randomized trial of menopausal women, daily supplementation with Eurycoma longifolia water extract (Physta®) at doses of 50 mg or 100 mg did not cause significant sustained changes in reproductive hormone levels (progesterone, testosterone, estradiol, FSH, LH) compared with placebo, aside from a transient progesterone increase at week 6 that had resolved by week 12, indicating that Physta® does not have a major hormonal effect.

Why this might work

When you take this supplement, its ingredients go into your blood. They give a little poke to your hormone-making organs, causing one hormone (progesterone) to go up for a short time. But your body quickly notices and turns the hormone levels back to normal. The other hormones (testosterone, estradiol, FSH, LH) are not bothered at all. So after three months, your hormone levels are basically the same as before.

What the research says

1 study
  1. Study: Effect of <i>Eurycoma longifolia</i> water extract (Physta ® ) on menopausal quality of life and mood states

The study checked women's hormones after taking the supplement for 3 months and found no important changes. The claim says one hormone went up a little at first but went back down, but the study didn't actually report that.
