Description
1 study reviewed
In plain English

Taking vitamin K2 supplements for 12 months does not change levels of blood markers related to mineral balance or heart health in adults with moderate to severe chronic kidney disease.

See the scientific wording

In adults with chronic kidney disease stages 3b or 4, vitamin K2 supplementation does not alter blood markers of mineral metabolism or vascular health, including B-type natriuretic peptide, over a 12-month period.

Why this might work

In advanced kidney disease, the blood contains too much calcium and phosphate, which build up in blood vessel walls. Vitamin K2 normally helps activate a protein that stops this buildup, but in this condition, the protein cannot be activated because the kidneys cannot process the vitamin properly, so the calcium and phosphate keep accumulating without change.

What the research says

1 study
  1. Study: Vitamin K Supplementation to Improve Vascular Stiffness in CKD: The K4Kidneys Randomized Controlled Trial.

This study gave people with advanced kidney disease vitamin K2 pills for a year and found no change in their heart or mineral blood markers compared to those who took a placebo. So, the vitamin didn’t help or hurt these measures.
