Hyperinsulinemia induces insulin resistance and immune suppression via Ptpn6/Shp1 in zebrafish.
Cross-Sectional Study
Animal
2014 AugThe study shows that when zebrafish have high insulin levels, they become insulin-resistant and the ptpn6 gene becomes more active. When researchers reduced ptpn6 activity, the fish stayed sensitive to insulin even when exposed to high levels. This proves ptpn6 acts as a 'middleman' that helps cause the switch from insulin-sensitive to insulin-resistant states.
