In visceral fat, excess fat breakdown releases fatty acids that activate an inflammation trigger called TLR4. This activation increases the production of inflammatory signals. At the same time, the fat tissue converts a harmless hormone into its active form, which binds to a receptor that boosts the activity of TLR4 and its inflammatory signals. This combined action causes more inflammation and higher levels of both the receptor and the trigger to appear together.
