Description
1 study reviewed
In plain English

Mood changes caused by ketogenic diets end when the diet stops, and do not continue after the short-term phase.

See the scientific wording

There is no evidence that the mood effects of ketogenic diets last beyond short-term intervention periods.

Why this might work

When the body switches to burning fat for fuel, it changes the levels of brain chemicals that affect mood. These changes happen quickly, but the brain adjusts over time to the new chemical environment, so the mood effects disappear once the diet stops.

What the research says

1 study
  1. Study: Ketogenic metabolic therapy for treatment-resistant post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): a retrospective case report

The study showed the person felt better while on the keto diet, but we don’t know if they stayed better after stopping the diet — so we can’t say if the mood boost lasts or fades.
