When muscles are worked to near failure with multiple repetitions, buildup of metabolic byproducts and sustained tension activate signaling pathways that tell muscle cells to build more contractile proteins and add new muscle fibers, leading to growth. This happens whether the training uses heavier weights with fewer reps or lighter weights with more reps, as long as the total fatigue and tension reach a threshold that triggers these biological signals.
What the research says
2 studiesWhether you lift heavier weights with the same number of reps or keep the same weight but do more reps over time, you still grow your muscles about the same amount — both ways work just as well.
This study found that doing more reps per set (around 10–12) grew muscles better than doing just 1 rep per set — even though both were part of different training styles. It didn’t test switching between high and low reps in the same workout, so it doesn’t support the idea that mixing rep ranges is just as good as sticking to moderate reps.
