What the research says
2 studiesEven though the low-rep group did more sets, their muscles grew just as much as the moderate-rep group — meaning each individual set of low reps built less muscle than each set of moderate reps.
This study found that lifting very heavy weights for few reps (4 reps) built just as much muscle as lifting lighter weights for 8 or 12 reps — as long as the total work was the same. So, the idea that low reps are worse for muscle growth isn’t supported.
