Certain bacteria produce large amounts of vitamin B12, which gets released into their surroundings. When these bacterial extracts are added to a special type of E. coli that cannot make its own methionine without B12, the vitamin B12 enters the cells and activates an enzyme that makes methionine. This allows the E. coli to divide and multiply, and the more B12 present, the more the bacteria grow. The amount of growth directly reflects how much B12 was in the original extract.
