As people age, their arteries become stiffer because the elastic fibers in their walls break down and are replaced by tougher collagen, which makes the arteries less able to absorb the force of each heartbeat. This causes the pressure spike during heart contraction to rise and the pressure between beats to drop, widening the gap between them. The heart keeps pumping the same amount of blood relative to body size because its chambers, valves, and blood vessels all scale proportionally with body surface area, maintaining efficient flow. The heart works slightly harder to push blood through stiffer arteries, which raises the pressure inside the heart chambers just enough to keep blood moving without changing the overall volume pumped per unit of body size.
