When fat from a high-fat diet enters blood vessel cells, a protein called CD36 pulls too much fat inside. This overload triggers a chain reaction that blocks the signal needed to make nitric oxide, a molecule that tells blood vessels to relax. Without enough nitric oxide, vessels stay stiff. The fat buildup also leaks out and poisons nearby muscle cells in the vessel wall, making them unable to respond to signals that should make them relax. Removing CD36 stops this fat overload, keeps nitric oxide levels normal, and lets both the lining and muscle of the blood vessel relax properly.
