This higher concentration tricks the kidneys into holding onto more water instead of flushing it out as urine. Glycerol does this by pulling water into the blood, and sodium from bicarbonate does it by signaling the kidneys to stop releasing water. Together, they raise the blood’s concentration faster than either one alone, so the kidneys start holding water sooner — within 120 minutes — and keep holding it for hours.
