The Claim

In C57BL/6J mice, a high-fat, low-carbohydrate, low-protein ketogenic diet causes weight loss and reduced fat mass in males while causing increased fat mass and body weight in females, despite equivalent ketone levels, indicating sex-specific metabolic responses to dietary ketosis.

How it works
1 study reviewed
In plain English

In male C57BL/6J mice, a ketogenic diet reduces body weight and fat mass, while in female C57BL/6J mice, the same diet increases body weight and fat mass, even though both sexes produce the same levels of ketones.

See the scientific wording

In C57BL/6J mice, a high-fat, low-carbohydrate, low-protein ketogenic diet leads to weight loss and reduced fat mass in males but increased fat mass and body weight in females, despite equivalent ketone levels, indicating sex-specific metabolic responses to dietary ketosis.

Why this might work

In males, the ketogenic diet activates brown fat to produce more FGF21, which increases calorie burning and fat loss. In females, estrogen blocks this FGF21 production, so brown fat does not burn more calories, leading to fat gain even though ketones are the same. Removing estrogen allows females to burn fat like males, and removing testosterone in males makes them gain fat like females.

  1. Study: Sex Differences in Ketogenic Diet Response Reveal Gonadal Hormone Interaction With FGF21 in Mice

When male and female mice eat the same super low-carb, high-fat diet, the males lose weight and fat, but the females gain weight and fat — even though both make the same ketones. This shows that being male or female changes how your body reacts to this kind of diet.
