In older mice, fat tissue around the belly releases proteins that make a specific type of immune cell multiply and produce more of a healing molecule. This molecule tells inflammatory cells in the fat to stop releasing harmful signals, which reduces fat damage, improves blood sugar control, and prevents early death. When the healing molecule is missing, inflammation worsens, fat turns scarred, blood sugar rises, and lifespan shortens. Adding back healthy versions of these immune cells reverses these problems.
