Why this might work

When the body doesn't get enough magnesium, heart cells lose magnesium. This makes the tiny energy factories inside the cells (mitochondria) produce harmful molecules that damage a protein that helps the heart relax. This damage makes the heart stiff and unable to pump blood properly. When magnesium is given again, the damage is repaired and the heart works normally.
