When casein is broken down into small pieces before digestion, it stops releasing opioid-like substances that slow down the gut. Without these substances, the gut moves food through faster. This happens because the opioid substances normally block the muscles in the gut from contracting properly; when they are absent, the muscles contract more freely and push food along quicker.
