When a person with type 2 diabetes fasts, the body tries to switch from using sugar to using fat for energy, but the cells remain resistant to insulin. This prevents the liver from reducing sugar production and stops muscles from taking up more sugar after meals. As a result, blood sugar after eating, good cholesterol, and fat levels in the blood stay the same as when eating regularly.
