In adults with mild to moderate Graves eye disease in areas where selenium levels are normal, taking 200 mcg of selenium and vitamin B complex daily for three months is associated with a small, temporary decrease in eye bulging, but this change disappears by six months.
In people with mild to moderate Graves ophthalmopathy in areas where selenium levels are adequate, taking 200 mcg of selenium daily for 3 to 6 months does not change the levels of thyrotropin-receptor antibodies or thyroid peroxidase antibodies.
In people with mild to moderate Graves ophthalmopathy in areas where selenium levels are normal, taking 200 mcg of selenium daily along with vitamin B complex for six months does not lead to a meaningful change in quality of life compared to taking vitamin B complex alone.
In adults with mild to moderate Graves ophthalmopathy in areas where selenium levels are adequate, taking 200 mcg of selenium and vitamin B complex daily for three months is associated with a higher rate of self-reported quality of life improvement compared to no such supplementation, but this difference is not observed after six months.
In adults with active Graves eye disease, taking 200 mcg of selenium and vitamin B complex daily for six months is associated with a small but statistically significant reduction in eye bulging compared to baseline, even though no benefit was seen in all patients with Graves eye disease.
