Scientists tested two kinds of glucosamine pills—one called 'crystalline' (more expensive) and one regular—to see if the fancy one gets into your blood better.

Max 100Randomized Controlled Trials
Max 90Cohort Studies
Max 72Case-Control Studies
Max 58Cross-Sectional Studies
Max 44Case Reports & Case Series
Max 30Expert Opinion & Narrative Reviews
Max 572 / 90
Evidence Score
Participants are randomly assigned to treatment or control groups, minimizing bias. Considered the gold standard for testing whether an intervention causes an effect.

The chemical structure of a nutrient determines how much of it enters the bloodstream, and specially designed forms increase the amount absorbed.
After taking glucosamine sulfate orally, glucosamine-6-sulfate appears in the bloodstream 6 to 8 hours later and remains in the body for about 40 hours before being cleared, regardless of which salt form was in the supplement.
When healthy adults take a single 1500 mg dose of crystalline glucosamine sulfate or regular glucosamine sulfate, the amount of glucosamine and glucosamine-6-sulfate entering the bloodstream is similar, but the range of variation in total exposure exceeds accepted bioequivalence limits.
After taking glucosamine sulfate by mouth, the level of N-acetylglucosamine in the blood does not change over 24 hours. This suggests that the body produces and regulates N-acetylglucosamine internally, regardless of glucosamine intake.
After taking glucosamine by mouth, blood levels of the compound rise again around 12 hours later, and this pattern occurs with both crystalline and regular forms of glucosamine sulfate.
