After exercise, eating a meal with lots of carbs and protein triggers a surge in insulin and amino acids in the blood. Insulin turns on a chain of signals that activates an enzyme to make glycogen, refilling muscle energy stores. At the same time, amino acids turn on a different chain of signals that switches on the cellular machinery to build new muscle proteins. Both processes happen together because the same meal provides the signals needed for both repair and energy restoration.
