Extra glycine in the blood enters lung and liver cells called macrophages, where it opens special channels that let chloride ions flow in. This makes the macrophages less active and stops them from triggering inflammation. With less inflammation in the lungs, cancer tumors are less likely to start or grow, allowing mice to live longer.
