When a person drinks a solution containing high-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid in a fermented food base, the acid passes through the gut, where bacteria break it into smaller pieces that enter the bloodstream. These pieces travel to the skin and tell skin cells to make more of their own hyaluronic acid. This increases water storage in the deeper skin layer, making the skin plumper and smoother. At the same time, the hyaluronic acid neutralizes harmful molecules that damage skin fibers, so collagen and elastin stay intact and the skin stays firm and less rough.
