When movements are slowed to extreme durations, the muscle fibers don't experience enough force quickly enough to fully activate the fast-growing muscle fibers. This means the body doesn't trigger the signals needed to build large amounts of new muscle tissue, even though the total time spent contracting is longer.
What the research says
3 studiesThe study found that doing squats with a slower lowering phase actually made muscles grow more, not less, compared to a faster lowering phase. So, slowing down doesn’t hurt muscle growth—it helps.
This study found that slowing down leg lifts a little bit didn’t make muscles grow less than lifting fast — even though it felt harder. But it didn’t test slowing down super slowly like 10 seconds, so we can’t say for sure about that.
Even when people lift weights super slowly, their muscles still grow—just not as much as when they lift heavier weights the normal way. So slowing down doesn’t stop muscle growth, it just makes it smaller compared to lifting heavy.
