The Claim

In patients with acute coronary syndrome, achieving an LDL cholesterol level below 55 mg/dL within 4 to 12 weeks after hospital discharge is associated with a 39% lower risk of recurrent major cardiovascular events within the first 6 months compared to those who do not meet this target.

In plain English

Patients with acute coronary syndrome who reduce their LDL cholesterol to below 55 mg/dL within 4 to 12 weeks after leaving the hospital have a 39% lower rate of recurrent heart attacks, strokes, or other major cardiovascular events within six months compared to those who do not reach this level.

See the scientific wording

In patients with acute coronary syndrome, achieving an LDL cholesterol level below 55 mg/dL within 4 to 12 weeks after hospital discharge is associated with a 39% lower risk of recurrent major cardiovascular events within the first 6 months compared to those who do not meet this target.

Why this might work

When bad cholesterol drops below 55 mg/dL, fewer cholesterol particles enter artery walls, so immune cells there stop accumulating fat and forming unstable plaques. The artery walls also become less inflamed, which strengthens the protective cap over plaques and prevents them from bursting. When plaques don't burst, blood clots don't form, so heart attacks and strokes don't happen.

What the research says

1 study
  1. Study: Cardiovascular Outcomes of Early LDL-C Goal Achievement in Patients with Very-High-Risk ASCVD

For people who’ve had a heart attack, getting their 'bad cholesterol' below 55 mg/dL within a few months after leaving the hospital is linked to a much lower chance of having another serious heart problem in the next six months—and this study proves it.
