In a large study of 400 people with HIV-related belly fat, tesamorelin reduced visceral fat by nearly 11% after 6 months, compared to less than 1% in the placebo group, and also reduced waist and trunk fat while increasing IGF-1 levels.

Scientific Claim

In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 404 HIV-infected patients with abdominal fat accumulation, tesamorelin reduced visceral adipose tissue by 10.9% (21 cm²) after 6 months compared to less than 1% in the placebo group, with concurrent reductions in waist circumference and trunk fat and increases in IGF-I levels.

Original Statement

The reason that we know so much about it and its fat loss effects is because it's been studied extensively in very specific populations. Okay? Originally they had looked at it a lot with people who had HIV who develop excess visceral fat and then lose muscle. So one of the most important studies here was published in 2010 like way back 15 years ago in the journal of acquired immune deficiency syndromes. So researchers recruited 400 individuals with excess visceral fat and followed them for a full year. So for the first 6 months participants received either tessamarellin or a placebo. But here's what happened. It was pretty interesting. Visceral fat decreased by nearly 11% in the tesarellan group. Okay, this was compared to less than 1% in the placebo group. Waist circumference went down, trunk fat went down, IGF levels went up, and that IGF one piece matters a lot. We'll come back to that.

This study found that a drug called tesamorelin helped HIV patients lose belly fat without harming their blood sugar, and it worked much better than a placebo.

This study shows that tesamorelin helps reduce belly fat in people with HIV, which matches the claim.

Tesamorelin not only reduces belly fat but also improves liver health in people with HIV.
