The Claim

Daily oral desogestrel combined with testosterone pellets for 8 weeks in healthy men is associated with suppression of luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone, with no significant differences observed between doses of 75, 150, or 300 micrograms.

In plain English

In healthy men, taking desogestrel pills along with testosterone pellets for 8 weeks reduces levels of luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone, and this reduction is similar regardless of whether the desogestrel dose is 75, 150, or 300 micrograms.

See the scientific wording

In healthy men, daily oral desogestrel combined with testosterone pellets for 8 weeks is associated with suppression of luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone without significant differences between doses of 75, 150, or 300 micrograms.

Why this might work

A synthetic hormone in the pill binds to brain receptors that control hormone signals, stopping the brain from telling the pituitary to release two key hormones. At the same time, a testosterone implant floods the body with androgen, which directly tells the pituitary and brain to stop making those same hormones. Together, this double signal shuts down the production of luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone, regardless of how much of the pill is taken, because the brain and pituitary are already fully silenced.

  1. Study: Dose-finding study of oral desogestrel with testosterone pellets for suppression of the pituitary-testicular axis in normal men.

In healthy men, taking a daily pill called desogestrel along with a testosterone implant for 8 weeks lowered two key hormones that control sperm production — and it didn’t matter whether they took a low, medium, or high dose of the pill; all doses worked about the same.
